report gennaio 2026

report febbraio-marzo 2026

English below – français en-dessous

From the border: april 2026 in Ventimiglia

This small chronology of the multiple violences produced by the border mechanisms and its agents of the inner-european border between France and Italy at the Mediterranean Sea is an incomplete and situated account. It pictures the situation from the perspective of (often white) observers with european citizenships and thus leaves out innumerable violent incidents experienced by those who are struggling and fighting for their freedom of movement. It is thus a very partial and limited picture of the situation leaving out the crucial perspectives of people on the move (POM) and sans-papiers (people without documents recognised as “valid” by french border agents).
Also the numbers of push backs and incidents cited here are simply momentary snapshots of the situation at the border – they do neither represent the numbers of pushbacks that we observe when regularly monitoring at the border (currently about 20 per day), nor do they adequately picture all violent incidents that we observe at this border.

3rd april

Seven people get released after detention in the french border police post of Menton in the morning. One of them has been controlled on the train coming from Ventimiglia by a french police man who has been shouting at him in front of all other passengers and pushing him around. None of the passengers (it was a full train) interfered to stop the harrassment. Another person with a large suitcase gets released on the steep mountain road just after the bus passed which is adding another three hours of waiting time until the next one.

6th april

Seven people are pushed back in the morning to France on the first day of easter holidays – a day without any public transportation to the next city in Italy.

7th april

The italian police is more frequently issuing expulsion papers from Italy to people who are being pushed back by the French police which is threatening them with deportation and expulsion from the entire Schengen zone. Since the first days of april people working in France are also more frequently arrested by the french police in the area of Menton and Nice – often in work clothing and froced to leave their vehicle behind in France when they are driven to the french border police post.

Despite numerous testimonies of unbearable hygenic situations, no access to food and water and lack of covers to be able to sleep during the night in the containers and cells of the french border police post where people are detained, the appeal of french NGOs to investigate conditions of detention is rejected by the responsible judges.

10th april

25 people were detained in the french border police post during the night of the 9th to the 10th of april. Amongst eleven of them who are released in the morning is at least one underage traveller who has been unlawfully refused his right to stay in France once entering french territory.

Another person has been living in France since four years and is pushed to Italy after a racist police control in the cafe where he habitually took his breakfast before work. As if this violent ICE-style interruption of everyday life was not enough, he is also issued an expulsion paper from Italy by the italian police at the end of the detention in the french border police post.

While in detention, another person has informed the police that he has five broken ribs and is in urgent need of painkillers. Not only did he not received any painkillers but also got refused medical support during detention.

One person asking the french police for drinking water during his detention reports to have been told to drink from the toilet flush.

All people detained over night and released in the morning did not get any food or covers to sleep. Although by midday a heat wave swept over the coast, people being released were still shivering after the night in police detention.

13th april

The six people who are pushed back from France to Italy in the morning have spend the night in the containers of the french border police post with seven other people. For all the 15 detainees there were only five very small matrasses available to sleep. Amongst those pushed back on that day are people who have been trying to arrive in France since six days. Their exasperation and fatigue as well as the unbearbale conditions of existance in Ventimiglia which are due to the city’s extreme politics of gentrification are forcing these people to take dangerous routes in order to arrive in France.

14th april

Two people declare to have been assaulted by the french police when they refused to hand out their telephones when stopped at the border. One of them is subsequently detained for 24 hours without any explanation.

Seven other people pushed back before midday describe the french border police as rude and refusing to give any information about the situaion of the detainees who had to stay over night.

15th april

In Ventimiglia the italian police expulses the informal settlement under the bridge which is currently the only available sleeping place for people on the move who are neither women nor underage. Starting at 6 am the police systematically confiscates all belongings of those dwelling under the bridge leaving people just with the clothes they wear.

16th april

All ten people pushed back from the french border police post to Italy in the morning state that they were not informed about their rights in custody.

17th april

Amongst the seven people pushed back to Italy in the morning are two people whose telephones have been taken by the police without any explanation. Three women who got stopped between 3 and 4 am and taken to the french border police post were given „zero information“ about what was going to happen with them.

Several people detained do not speak any european language well enough to communicate with the police who did not provide translation.

20th april

Increasingly people start to be pushed back in the very early morning hours as well as in the evening after the last bus driving to the next city (Ventimiglia).

21st april

After the tires of five italian police cars in Ventimiglia got slashed the police arrests a young person who is also accused of living in Italy without valid documents – as if it was his choice.

22nd april

Those released from the french border police post and pushed back to Italy repeatedly report that the containers where they have been detained smell „too bad to breathe“ and that it was too cold to be able to fall asleep.

27th april

On this day many italian speakers who were not speaking any french are detained by the french police. The french police officers first speak italian with the detainees but at some point during the detention start to claim that they do not speak italian any more. Additionally the behaviour of the french border police is described as racist.

Amongst the people detained are several persons who have arrived in Europe only a few days ago. Almost half of their time in Europe they have been forced to spend in the smelly containers of the french border police.

28th april

At least four people are released in the evening from the french border police post and pushed back to Italy. The last bus to Ventimiglia has just passed a few minutes ago. The people who have been detained, arrived in Europe some days ago and do not speak any european languages. They were not provided with translation in the french border police post and are issued expulsion papers from Italy by the italian police when being pushed back without any explanation of the devastating legal consequences and possibilities to appeal against them.

De la frontière: observations à Vinitimille, avril 2026

3 avril

From the broder: monitoring report February and March 2026

2nd of February

19 people are released in daytime by the french border police. Most of them have experienced prolongued detentions of 6,5 to 10 hours and have not received any information about their rights in custody nor translation when talking to the police. All telephones got confiscated by the police and later on returned with no comment. Some of the detainees received no food during the detention.

3rd of February

16 people are released after having experienced detention times of 4 to 16 hours in the cells of the border police post. A women testifies that there was no separation of detainees along the lines of gender in the cells.

On the document the french border police hands out to the people when being released there is the hand-written abbreviation „ISM“ where there should be a signature of the translator although the people pushed back to Italy on that day testify that no translator was present.

A man released at 10:00am does not get his document back. He french police men tell him that they do not know where it is although it has been confiscated when the man has been arrested.

A pregnant women who is also pushed back to the italian side of the border on that day reports to have been verbally harrassed by a police officer. She was refused to take the medicine she needed due to her suffering from diabetes and di not get any food or water during her detention.

4th of February

The six people who are pushed back to Italy by the french police on that day have been separated from their telephones when they were in custody and as they get them back just before being told to walk up the road to Italy across the border by the french police, they notice that they are not functioning as well as they have been before.

16th of February

Three people are pushed back to Italy from France by the french border police on that day. One of them is in an asylum process in France and had accidentally taken a wrong train before that brought him to Ventimiglia. When trying to get back to France he is arrested at the border and put in detention over night. Here he is woken up several times in the middle of the night by police in plain clothes in order to be questioned in an exhausting way, brought back to his cell and woken up again an hour or two later.

The 16th of February is also the day when 15 people (9 in Italy and 6 in France) get arrested in a special french-italian police operation. They instantly get condemned for humanitarian acts such as giving clothes to people on the move or sharing information about the border zone which they inhabit. As if this would not be outrageous enough: according to the french-italian special operation task force arresting the so called „smugglers“, prices they had been taking for passage from Italy to France were between 50 and 100 Euros – a sum of money people would normally carry around in their wallet.

23rd of February

Amongst the people released and pushed back by the french border police to Italy is an elderly man who owns a small bus company and just got released from a prison in Nice where he spent 3 months because of being condemned for human trafficing in an extremely quick court case. He reports that he did neither have the time to organise a lawyer nor call for support. He is accused of not having checked the documents of passangers he was taking as customers from Rome to Marocco. As he is stopped at the border and explains that he is not a police man but a bus driver and hence refuses to do the job of the police, his bus and his telephone are confiscated.

25th of February

Italian police is making a paroll under the highway bridge in Ventimiglia, the last space where people on the move and people who have been disposessed in the process of migration store their last personal belongings in tents. In February the police proceeds to destroy and to confiscate tents and personal belongings leaving people to face the night with nothing at all.

Fewer people are migrating from Italy to France this month. This is also due to the month of February 2026 being marked by fewer new arrivals by boat in Italy compared to February of the year before. This is also due to several humanitarian catastrophes in the Mediterrenean, to boats that did not make it to the Italian coast and hundreds of people dead or missing in the sea.

9th of March

Phones are now regularily collected from the people who find themselves in detention at the french-italian border. This was the case for all 8 people released on the morning of that day. They have been arrested on the highway petrol station near Nice and on the train. They had spent the night in different cells which they report being extremely stinky.

14th of March

The dead body of a 25 year old tunisian man is found on the traintracks. Lacking safe passages, he got apparently hit by a train when attempting to take this dangerous path to France at night. His friends from Germany (where he was living for a long time before being deported) report about him that he was dreaming about a stable life in France.

16th of March

6 people are pushed back in the morning. They have spent the night in the police station’s cells. The covers and pillows that were on the matrasses in the cells when they got visited by politicians a week before had disappeared. Three people working in France and living in Liguria were arrested on the highway in their working clothes.

17th of March

On the next day, amongst the nine people pushed back in the morning, there is a similar situation: people working in France since a long time are arrested on the highway, the truck of their company is confiscated and their boss is forced to pick them up at the police station at the border. The racist border mechanisms are clearly not only putting their mental health but also their jobs at risk.

19th of March

Most of the ten people pushed back this morning have equally been on their way to work. Some of them are simply waiting for their documents to arrive and have the receipt of their prolongued residence permits on their phone – not enough for the french border police.

20th of March

14 people are pushed back in the morning. They are released between 9:30am and 12:05 – just after the bus has left. Those who had spent the night in the cells of the border police report that there were neither covers nor food in the cells during their detention. It was freezing cold and impossible to find any sleep.

A student was arrested when travelling to the embassy in Marseille where he had an appointment to make a new passport. When detained by the french border police and pushed back to Italy, the italian police even came to speak to the french police officers about the case of the student: there were no legal reasons to deny him the entry to France – he had all his papers. The italian police addressing their french colleagues did not help and the person was pushed back to Italy – a showcase of the unreliability of bureaucratic processes. As a racialised person one can neither rely on official paperwork nor on the lawfulness of the police.

Another person pushed back from France to Italy was visibly handicapped and had difficulties to walk. Still he was told by the french border police to walk up the steep road into Italy.

On that day the french border police not only had no translators for the detainees available, they were also giving detainees the aggressive order to speak with them in french. Not surprisingly, one person pushed back to Italy reports to have been violently shaken by a police man upon his arrest.

23rd of March

This morning at the border proceeds in its violent and inhuman habituality: amongst those pushed back to Italy 6 people testify that the cells were very crowded in the night, the magic covers that only appear when political representatives come to visit the cells were still absent, there was no translator nor any information about rights in custody, all phones were confiscated upon arrest and at least one person had to endure two hours of exhaustive questioning about religious habits by a policeman in plain clothes while others were arrested near the french city of Menton on their daily way to work.

26th of March

It is no surprise that people want to avoid the experience of being arrested and put into custody in the french border police station. This is what is happening to those taking public transports and other safe passages to France. A 17 year old attempted to avoid this experience and walked the so called passo de la morte starting in the italian village of Grimaldi and leading to the french city Menton across the mountain. The young person fell and rolled for about ten metres, injured his hip and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

27th of March

In the morning of that day at least 4 people are pushed back from France to Italy and forced to walk 9 kilometres along the road to the city of Ventimiglia. At least two other people are brought to Ventimiglia in cars of the italian police. Those pushed back and having to walk on the road were travelling to France on trains and busses in order for their appointments to be reached on time. What started as a well planned journey turned into nightmares as soon as one of the detainees was controlled by the french border police at the petrol station near the city of Nice in the evening of 26th of March:

„There were no covers in the cells, it was too cold to sleep and all I was given to eat was a dead-looking salad in a small box. The police seized the personal phones of everybody and some arabic speaking people who were detained with me were complaining about the racist behaviours of the police men.“

30th of March

A 16 year old from Somalia is waiting for his equally 16year old brother to come out of the french police station. He gives up waiting for him at midday – just after another young man from Egypt has been pushed back to the italian side of the border. He testifies that a fench police man has grabbed his jacket and dragged him around. There was no translator present and when the young man was made to answer personal questions under a lot of pressure the french police has used a telephone to translate their questions. At the same time the young man was separated from his telephone when he was in the cell of the french border police station.
