Una manifestazione transfemminista contro i confini:

Ventimiglia/Mentone sabato 5 e domenica 6 giugno

Domenica, ritorno in frontiera (a Ventimiglia)

Sabato 5 e domenica 6 giugno, Ventimiglia-Mentone

A TRANSFEMINIST DEMONSTRATION AGAINST BORDERS:

Ventimiglia/Mentone Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of June

Tuoutes aux frontierès: transfeminist demo in solidarity with the people detained at the French-Italian border of Ventimiglia, a first victorious step of the European transfeminist movement against the european borders, against Frontex and the police, against sexism and racism … or how the people demonstrating managed to jam the discriminatory and racial gears of the border devices for hours.

A transfeminist demonstration against borders and migration policies was held in Nice in the afternoon of Saturday 5 June 2021

In the same day, people in solidarity who live and cross the Italian-French border area decided to spend the morning protesting against borders in the territory of Ventimiglia and Mentone as well, to give everyone the possibility of gathering in a day against borders, even for those who might have problems because of the covid checks or for distance from Nice.

An impromptu appointment for the morning of Saturday 5th of June, imagined and shared as a solidarity greeting to the transfeminist demonstration of Nice, and moment of fight and support for people imprisoned inside the containers of the PAF (Police aux frontieres), further sparked protests right on the border.

The demonstration at the border

After gathering at 10:30 at the Italian border, the people in solidarity moved to protest directly in front of the PAF offices and the containers on the french side, where several dozen undocumented people were reclused. Some people without documents from Ventimiglia have decided to participate as well. There have been banners, signs, shouts, choirs, speeches, songs, greetings to locked up people for more than an hour, a few centimeters far away from the french prison structures, from where people imprisoned trying to cross the border have sent greetings and responses to the calls of those demonstrating.

Italian police watched from distance trying to understand what was happening, subsequently deploying a group of riot police; French police showed themselves in trouble, unprepared for a very participatory and unannounced transfeminist demonstration, that managed to go beyond the border without the authorities being able to obstruct or react.

Reinforcements arrived from the French side and tried to get the people back, but collective rage against borders responded with even more noise and chants. When the complicity and the enthusiasm of the people locked inside has begun to grow, Paf entered the containers and gassed those inside with stinging spray: a sudden silence fell inside, a strong chemical smell inflamed the eyes of those who were protesting up to a hundred meters around the sheet metal cages.

In the afternoon, released people have then reported that dozens of them were collapsed in containers under gas. Despite this, they showed themselves happy for the demonstration that has taken place in the morning, enthusiastically asking to bring greetings and solidarity more often.

Around noon the demonstration climbed towards the Italian side, passing in front of police offices and then dispersing.

In Ventimiglia, on the train to Nice

Many people have decided to continue the protest, going to get a train at Ventimiglia station, to reach in the afternoon the transfeminist demonstration in Nice. On the Italian rail towards France people have faced with the usual presence of Italian police and private security, which has the daily task to stop and control, at the top of the underpass, all non-white passengers, before they can be able to get on the train which is still at the platform. The group has simply continued to advance, pulling back the police who tried to stop some people, but then stepped aside and finally let the protesters board the 1:55 pm train, rather leaving it to the French colleagues upon arrival in Menton Garavan. Once on board, some people already present on the train joined the “Manif Nizza” wagon.

Ten minutes later, upon arrival at the first station in France, Menton Garavan, French police who have been checking every convoy for six years looking for all the people without documents, approached the train for the usual blitz. It found though a wagon of shouts, choirs and percussion against borders awaiting. To any attempt of mediation or request for identity documents, it was answered protesting and ringing even louder. At one point, the conductor said “if you are quiet and let the controls to be, we continue to Nice without problems ”.

Controls means racial roundups, it means people who have not committed any rime dragged by force into the containers of the Paf or the gendarmerie and beaten for hours without food and water in a metal box. It means that people are insulted and humiliated, gassed and beaten, men, women, intersex, trans persons, or minors who are. The choirs against the borders did not stop.

Blockage on the train at Menton Garavan

At one point the intercom of the train warned people that the train was still, and that another train to continue would have been found, arriving on the other platform, which normally covers the reverse line, from France to Ventimiglia. People who wanted to reach the demonstration in Nice then moved as well to go out with the other passengers, so as to change train and be back on the travel.

Army ginks of the PAF and of gendarmerie went to the two exits of the wagon, to block those who wanted to reach the transfeminist demonstration in Nice. They violently crushed people, shouting, throwing up their hands, grabbing, punching, insulting and provoking by threatening to use gas or resorting to sexist verbal harassment.

For the whole time when people have been blocked waiting for reinforcements to arrive from Nice airport, the police hit people with anger and ferociousness aggression, encounter the confrontation only with the very few straight men cis present as the only solution to a situation they did not know how to face. When reinforces arrived with vans, people have been then forced to get off by force, between kicks, punches and shoves, some with her head held down by force, some taken and almost lifted by the neck, they were loaded onto the vehicles and deported again on the other side of the border, right in front of the Italian police offices.

In the end, only one person in solidarity was detained, accused of assault to public official, and two people without documents. These two have been moved to the container and released after a few hours in the direction of Italy, together with all the other people stopped in previous checks.

The person accused of assault, on the other hand, remained in the border offices French in custody for 24 + 24 hours, called “garde à vue” in France and extendable up to 48 hours except for more serious cases.

The Italian police, outraged and nervous about the illegal pushback of community people, downloaded by his French colleagues on Italian soil without even identification, decided to suspend work for the rest of the afternoon, entering a “readmission strike”. If in the morning the blackmail of power in front of a demonstration with which could not find dialogue has been gassing trapped people, in the afternoon the spite of the Italian authorities has decided to block on the bridge that separates the Italian territory from the French one, Ponte San Luigi, all migrants rejected by France.

Lined up at the beginning of the bridge, a group of Italian policemen in uniform and others in plain clothes who were filming, continued for hours refusing people from entering, while at the end of bridge nervous French policemen controlled the situation and held the refusal to entry in France.

All the people who were directed to the transfeminist demonstration in Nice have gathered between the two borders, waiting for news of the people stopped and for unlocking the stalemate for people without documents, triggered by a question of pride and childish spite between the armed forces of the two countries.

After about four hours of soliciting, a plainclothes policewoman went to negotiate inside the French offices with colleagues, to return to the beaming bridge, explaining that it was there it was only a “communication problem” and that it was all solved: the community people could freely go to France or Italy at will, “instead we take them ‘cause we have to deal with them ”, she said pointing at the migrants blocked for the whole afternoon by the Italian police.

Upon confirmation that the person in solidarity would have been detained in garde à vue, and once that all people have been authorized to return to Italy and, for those confirmed minors, the return to France was reconsidered after the intervention of the lawyer, the 12-hour day at the “high border” of Ponte San Luigi ended with an appointment for the next day, in the same place.

Sunday, return to the border (Ventimiglia)

Sunday 6th around 2 pm, when the lawyer confirmed that the French policemen had found a trick to extend the solidarity person’s 24 hours of garde à vue stopped the day before, with the ploy of the late request for acquisition for the cameras of the train and the station of Menton Garavan, the group of solidarity people has approached the containers again, shouting for a couple of minutes choruses and greetings to all the people incarcerated at that time, who have in turn again answered; while from the window of the French police station some policemen showed him stinging spray aimed at containers, as a threat of further revenge on people recluse.

In a few seconds, when the people in solidarity were leaving, the PAF came out running from the offices, some pulling out batons, some waving the spray, stopping in line up on the border line for a few seconds, probably before getting an authorization to trespass from the Italian police: a rapid movement of mobile phones between one side to the other of the border, has broken the delay of the French police, who ran angrily to surround a car of supportive people on Italian soil which was maneuvering to leave.

Five people were attacked and forcibly pulled out of the car, taken inside the French border offices with their arms locked behind their backs. Italian police, a few hundred meters away, observed and filmed everything. After a few hours, all people were released with a refus d’entrée (refusal of entry) from France, the same as those that are given to dozens of deferred people every day in Italy, and a fine of 135 euros for entry into France – of about five meters – without testing covid.

Monday, all at the borders!

On the third day of protesting at the border, after further greetings from the people in the containers, who climbed from the closing grate on the roof, to greet the presence of supportive people, and after 45 hours of garde à vue, it was released as well the last person taken on the train to Nice.

The racial roundups on both sides of the border and the detention of people for hours without documents in sheet metal prisons, continues day after day. Together to human trafficking, to the sale of women’s bodies as a ticket to to cross the border, to under-the-table agreements between cops and thieves, to physicals assaults everyday more frequent against non-white people.

However, their daily struggle to survive in an hostile, dangerous, violent, racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and patriarchal territory keeps going. As feminists, we will not stop helping them by any  necessary way to exercise their fundamental freedom of movement.

European States, hand in hand with the traffickers !

In Europe, borders are Rape !

We want all administrative detention centers to be closed !

We want the opening of all borders and the end of the police and arms business!
